Member Reviews for Planet Bike Blaze 2 Watt LED Front Light

Planet Bike Blaze 2 Watt LED Front Light

The brightest version yet of Planet Bike™’s popular and affordable Blaze series. In steady mode, it pumps out enough illumination to light your way at a respectable commuting speed. In urban environments with a lot of ambient light, the SuperFlash mode should attract the attention of any driver not clinically in a coma. The SuperFlash mode also is bright enough to be seen by day – great for “daylighting” in rain or shine.

Excellent Light for the Value

Date:April 21, 2012
I use two of these lights on my mountain bike and find they are more than sufficient to light my way at night. I personally like riding at night on park trails when pedestrian traffic is at a minimum, and even in the forested areas of my rides I find that these lights do the job.
They are excellent value for money spent and I don't understand cyclist that ride at night and use those whimpy lights that can barely identify you to motorists when few a few dollars more you can stand out like a sore thumb.
I carry a third 2-Watt Blaze which I can mount to my helmet when I am riding in the forest or in zero light areas.
I know some people have complained about the handlebar brackets being difficult to tighten, but I don't why they have problem. The helmet mount is a bit of b*tch, but is because of design of my vents on my helmet.
I change I would recommend is an adhesive mount for a helmet.
Pros: Lightweight, Simple, Good Value, Reliable
Cons: better helmet mount kit

Super bright!

Date:March 11, 2012
This has become my primary commuting light. Really good projection of the light and is visible from far away. One caution... some cars seem to be locked on to the blinking lights (deer staring problem) and turn right into the bike path!

A very bright light. The battery life is excellent. No flickering. Installing it was easy. Removing it when you lock up is a cinch.
The only complaint I could think of is that the on-button is hard to find in the dark, especially with cold fingers or gloves.
Not enough to change my 5 star rating though.

Great at what it's for.

Date:March 10, 2012
It's an unobtrusive visibility enhancer on my rain bike. When I am riding after work into failing light, it is perfect to see and be seen. It isn't suitable for fast or offload night riding, but then again that's not what it's for. I would buy it again.

I'm a recreational rider who often does early morning road rides which in the spring can be dark. I found this light to be very effective. It was easy to mount and easy to use while riding.

Amazing value

Date:January 18, 2012
It is a great product for the price. I have ridden many times on 80km/h roads at night and have had cars been able to see me. If you want to ride singletrack or want to feel safer, I'd get a brighter light.

2 watt plastic not as good

Date:December 10, 2011
I've owned and dropped the 1/2 watt version of these lights for years and have loved them however, preferring the luminosity of the 2 watt model I have had to sacrifice brightness for longevity because the plastic on the 2 watt model is far more brittle; they break just enough to be useless from just a small tumble.
I have to buy two 2 watt lights a year!!!
The 2 watt version should be made out of the same durable material the half watt ones were made of.
Pros: Bright
Cons: Flimsy, Fragile, Not durable

Best Sub $40 light, battery life better than Dread

Date:December 8, 2011
I have both the Blaze 2 and the Portland Designs Cosmic Dreadnought on my bike. The Dreadnought is mounted on the left side of my handlebar for greater visibility to oncoming traffic. The Blaze 2 is mounted on the right side for shining straight ahead.
Pros:
- Is primarily a spot light, 126 lumens is brighter than the Cosmic Dreadnought's 110 lumens
- Has a slightly warmer (yellower) light than the Blaze 2
- 10 hours on high mode continuously is far better than the Cosmic Dreadnought's 2-4 hours (advertised as 10 hours, but it isn't!)
Cons:
- You can't compare this to a multi-hundred dollar mountain bike light. This light is for some visibility in town and spotting some potholes. It's still only sub $40!
- Removal of batteries requires only a small twist, it's conceivable that this may loosen over time and may fall apart if dropped, but that hasn't happened to me yet
- Larger and bulkier than the Cosmic Dreadnought
Overall:
- If I had only one light in the sub $40 category, the Blaze 2 would be my first choice, for it's slightly brighter beam and far better battery life than the Cosmic Dreadnought
- I choose to use one of each type on my bike because this light gives me longer battery life for outings while the Dreadnought's wider spread of beam helps make me more visible to ongoing and perpendicular traffic
Pros: Simple, Good Value

Not impressed

Date:November 18, 2011
I bought this light two days ago, so I think that I should give it some more time to give it a fair chance at proving itself, but so far, I am thoroughly underwhelmed.
While reflections from reflective materials, such as bike lane signs on the road, are certainly very bright, most concrete and -worse- asphalt is very dark indeed. and I hardly see a thing.
Although I am not a downhiller, off-roader, technical track rider or anything "extreme" of the sort, my research requires me to go into places where there is *no* street lighting of any kind. The low light level of this light, makes me ride my bike so slowly (4 - 5 kph) that I my balance becomes uncertain, and makes me feel like going on foot.
For the rest, I like everything about this light. However, how useful are things such as a reliable strap, convenient battery exchange... if the light itself is all but unusable?
In short: I like *everything* about this light, except for what it's meant to do: light my path. It doesn't.
If possible, I will post a picture or two of how "well" it performs. This light does many things well, but "blaze" isn't one of them.

My Product Recommendations

Pros: Rugged, Simple, Reliable, Good looking
Cons: does not light my path

Wish I ordered sooner...

Date:November 16, 2011
I finally bit the bullet and ordered replacement lights front and back. My previous lights (flashing leds) have been on the bike for 15 years and are not superbright. Although I have reflective tape everywhere on the bike and on my helmet (along with wearing a reflective vest) I recently had some one pull out in front of my bike, while I had the right of way. It was then that I realized that even with 320 lumens of daylite technology up front I am still not getting the visibility message to drivers--I need brighter, stronger strobe effect and thus I opted for the Planet Blaze 2 watt model up front and the Superflash Turbo in the rear. I have sinced moved one of my 160 lumen daylite flashlights onto my helmet, but the positioning is not ideal. I will probably move it back up front onto a handlebar extension recently ordered. Day or night I don't think you can have enough visibility reminders for drivers and the Planet Blaze lights are a beginning for those who value their life and bodily health. Already I am looking at more intense taillights or another order from Planet Bike.
Pros: Lightweight, Simple, Good Value, intense light output, readily available batteries
Cons: handlebar mount can be difficult to adjust.

Poor mounting stability

Date:November 16, 2011
Seems these companies don't test their products much before shipping them.
-The mounting bracket is almost impossible to adjust to prevent slipping around on the bars. I find myself adjusting it every time I go to ride (which is every day).
-The clip that holds the light onto the bracket is pathetic and the light will slide off at random intervals.
-Don't go over ANY bumps or the light will start to tilt downward until it's pointing at your tire. A balanced mount-point should have been the first thing factored into the design of any bike light.
-Basically useless for anything but a completely smooth ride, which in Calgary streets is impossible.
It's cheap, bright and the battery lasts quite a long time, so that's good.
I'm tempted to return it, but there aren't many other options in the price-range.
Pros: Simple, Good Value
Cons: Flimsy

Lot's of 'bang' for the money

Date:November 10, 2011
My commute often involves city riding at night. This light illuminates street signs up to 100 m or so away and is pretty much impossible for drivers to miss! Makes me feel a lot safer, too.
WARNING: If you use a wireless bike computer, this unit emits enough RF interference to render the speed/cadence sensors on your bike useless. Your bike computer will read the flash pulses as signals from your sensors and will think you're doing about 60kph when you're standing still. Even in steady illumination modes (high and low power), there is still interference as the light still flashes, you just can't percieve the individual flashes as the pulse rate is so high.
I like the light so I'm switching back to my wired bike computer. Oh well.
Pros: Simple, Good Value
Cons: interferes with wireless bike computer operation!

Very good value for the money

Date:November 9, 2011
Bought this light with the helmet strap - it's a bit dim for single track trail riding, but it's durable and stays on the helmet. Battery change is a snap and doesn't require you to remove the light from the helmet which is a big bonus!

my new headlight

Date:November 7, 2011
After trying out a couple different headlights, this is what I"m now using! The light is bright enough for early morning commutes (a second one may be necessary for really dark mornings) and the batteries last a long time (almost 3 weeks). I was skeptical since it's LED but I'm impressed!

Best bike light

Date:November 6, 2011
I have tried a lot of bike lights and this is the best one for either seeing the road condition or as a defensive flashing strobe. I carry one on my helmet and one on my handlebars for full coverage. Attachment for either location is quick and simple.

Awesomely bright light

Date:September 7, 2011
While it costs more than your standard cheapo at your LBS, this light is very bright and will make you and your path visible at night. I tested this out in mid-day sun in July and it was bright enough to be see at 3 meters which says a lot. Haven't had any issues with it. :)

Perfect for Campground

Date:September 6, 2011
I purchased two of the 1 Watt lights that were very effective for our use (rail trail riding at dusk)
Decided to buy two of the 2 watt lights so the whole family would have lighting available for late night bathroom/comfort station rides.
Both the 1 & 2 watt lights are very effective.
From my eye it appears that the two watt light is not really much brighter, but it does offer a large spread of light ahead.
Battery life is very in good both.
Pros: Rugged, Simple, Reliable
Cons: Expensive
